Where should a preference quiz live: homepage, PDP, or cart?
September 22, 2026
There is no universal best spot. Homepage quizzes get volume, product page quizzes get context, and cart quizzes get almost no one. Match the placement to what you want the answers for.
Homepage: volume, but vague intent
A quiz linked from the homepage hero gets the most starts because it catches everyone. The tradeoff is intent: many starters are browsing, so completion rates run lower and the answers skew generic. Homepage placement works when the goal is list growth or broad segmentation, not when you need precise product matches.
Product page: context, better matches
A quiz on or near the product detail page reaches shoppers with a category already in mind. Completion is higher and the answers are more useful, because "what are you looking for" means something when the shopper is staring at running shoes. This is the best placement when the quiz exists to drive a recommendation.
Cart: almost nobody, but high value
Few shoppers start a quiz in the cart, and interrupting checkout with questions is risky. The exception is post-purchase or a quiet cart drawer moment, where a one-question preference check can inform replenishment emails. Treat cart placement as a retention tool, not a discovery tool.
How to decide
Start with the product page if recommendations are the goal, the homepage if list building is. Run one placement at a time for at least two weeks, and measure completion rate and downstream revenue per starter, not just starts. The placement with the most starts is not always the one that earns its keep.
